Spheres MUX - FAQ
How do I get a character?
Use your telnet client to connect to the address: spheresmux.net, port 7777.
You will be presented with a login screen, type 'connect guest guest' and you
will be connected to a guest character. Read the screen, it will provide you
with further instructions!
At some point during the process you'll have to pick your species, or you can let the Core choose it for you - it's up to you. The Core will add characters to the regions that need them the most, based on a number of factors.
After that... you're on your own! Step through the Gate, and you'll be whisked on your way to your new home.
ACK! My telnet client is awful! What are some better ones?
A lot of people like SimpleMU. Another excellent client, designed mostly for MUDs, but which works very well with Spheres as well, is zMUD. Unix users will likely be impressed and happy with TinyFugue.
There are a lot of other great clients out there... feel free to E-mail any suggestions.
But I don't want to be one of those creatures!
Want to be something else? If you can get together ten other players (not alts) who also want to play the same species, let us know, and we'll work with you to start a new sphere!
Where is it?
Spheres can be found at spheresmux.net, port 7777
What are the rules?
We've tried to keep it really simple. From the news rules section on the MUX -
- No out of character abusive/hateful behaviour will be tolerated. Period. If you are abusive to another player or players, you will not be given a warning. Your characters will be @toad'ed and if necessary your site banned. We are not flexible on this issue.
- We strongly discourage powergaming. Powergaming is when you deliberately create a character to overpower others, or when you roleplay in such a manner as to force the actions of others. A good example of powergaming follows:
"Darth hits Frank right in the face with his fist, breaking all of Frank's teeth and sending him flying back against the wall, unconcious."
This is definitely NOT good roleplaying technique. Something more appropriate:
"Darth swings his fist at Frank's face, throwing all his weight behind the punch, intent on knocking his opponent unconcious."
Frank can now decide how he wants to respond to this aggressive play. A good roleplayer may very well allow Darth to hit him, but he gets to decide the fate of his own character. For more RP examples and information on SpheresMUX combat system, see 'news combat' after logging into the game. - This is not intended to be a social MUX. If you are speaking out of character please ensure you are in a private area where you will not disturb others. People play at role playing games to enjoy an alternate reality, and when others drag real life into it it ruins the atmosphere.
- Coding. We welcome coders with open arms. We recognize that code placed here by the coder is their property and it will be respected as such. However, if a piece of code is integrated in a manner which affects how the MUX functions and the coder decides to withdraw it we reserve the right to keep the code for a reasonable period of time until a replacement can be found or written.
Setting up your character
You only need to know a few commands to flesh out your character on Spheres MUX. First, you need to have a text editor of your own (like Notepad, if you're a windows user). Use this to write up a description of yourself. If you want to force carriage returns in the text (to make paragraphs), just put in a %r. Now string that whole description into one line, and use your computer's paste function, along with the command @desc, to set your new description:
@desc me=My great big new description (for example).
For more help, check out 'news primer', on the MUX... and remember that the 'help' command is your friend!
