Sphere goals

Our goal has been to provide rich, interesting environments that will challenge and excite players. Rather than huge empty tracts, we have tried to stay focussed - only expanding when there are enough players with sufficient interest to make new areas interesting and well occupied.

Sphere description

Each sphere in SpheresMUX is essentially an enormous bubble which represents a 'snapshot' of a certain planet and species, in each case to which has been added a massive 30 meter tall black pyramid in the very center. At the top of each pyramid is a 'portal' which teleports you to the central Core. More about that in a minute.

The spheres are 250KM in diameter, for a total of about 50,000 square KM in surface area. They are arranged close together, so that each one touches six others. At the interface where the spheres touch (10 Km wide), travel from one to the the other is possible. At all other places along the edge of the sphere, there is not a solid 'surface', but rather an increasing resistance, much like compressing a spring, until you simply cannot move any further in that direction.

The portals teleport you from the top of the pyramid into the central Core. The core is a meeting place of sorts, for all the races, and is traditionally a conflict-free area. The Core also contains a gate, and stepping into it will transport you directly back to your home sphere, regardless of what sphere you entered from.

Each sphere contains a unique combination of species, environment, and level of technology and/or magic. There is also a carefully followed order regarding the types of sphere that are adjacent to eachother, as you can see from this illustration. This tiling continues outwards infinitely, as far as anyone can tell. For those interested in building a new sphere, a tentative map has been made which shows which spheres have been proposed to be 'water' spheres only, and which ones 'land' spheres. This is not definitive and will almost certainly change, so its best to ask a wizard about whether a given sphere is available to build a land or water race in.

An important side-effect of this is that what functions perfectly well in one sphere may not work at all in another. Gunpowder works quite well in most technology levels, but fails entirely in low-tech areas. Magic, on the other hand, usually fails to work at all, in the higher-tech spheres.

There are several reasons for this arrangement, the foremost of which is to help prevent any single sphere from conquoring the rest of the 'world'. The tanks from one sphere would be no match for the great wizard's death spells, while the archers from a low tech sphere would be cut to pieces by the rifles or lasers of a higher tech land.
